It is an unfortunate fact in this day and age that most of us will have met, or know someone that suffers from some type of addiction. Addiction is also, unfortunately, a taboo topic. People who are suffering from alcohol abuse or any other kind of addiction rarely want to talk about their problems, and a lot of people don’t want to listen.
This is where we come in. We don’t shy away from the issue of drug and alcohol addiction. Our drug and alcohol addiction rehab centres treat all patients as individuals and help them in any way we can. If you live in Eccles or the Greater Manchester area and feel like you could benefit from treatment then don’t hesitate to get in touch. Even if you are just after a little advice over the phone, we’ll be happy to help.
The negative effects of prolonged drugs and alcohol abuse
At first, it can be very difficult to realise or even admit that you have a problem. What you think may count as casual drinking can be seen as a serious problem for other people. It’s also important to remember that even though you feel you may be able to handle it, your body may be thinking otherwise. There is no telling the internal problems you may be causing. If what once started as casual drinking now seems like it has grown to the point where your whole routine is affected by alcohol then please seek help.
We find a lot of people who contact us are worried friends or family members, especially when it comes to young people who are affected by alcohol. Young people getting caught up in a circle of substance abuse is particularly troubling as it is happening alongside the pivotal moments in their upbringing. If somebody is drinking their problems away when they should be studying for a career then this can really hurt them in the long term.
Drinking at such a young age can also have a huge impact on mental health. Drugs and alcohol can often be used as a coping mechanism in young people who are struggling with various troubles in their life. This is a troubling thing as it can serve to mask problems which can later reoccur in life.
So what causes addiction?
There are a lot of factors to consider when trying to pinpoint the cause of addiction. Narrowing these down is a valuable way for health services to determine how best to treat patients.
Some people are born with addictive tendencies
Not all people are born this way but the genetic predisposition towards addiction is a highly researched topic. It has been noted that what some people can handle in regular short doses, can trigger major addictive tendencies in others. When this happens, the person can become reliant on drugs and alcohol very quickly, often without even realising.
Prescription medicine can sometimes do more harm than good
Not counting drugs that are used recreationally such as cocaine and marijuana, some people can become addicted to other drugs such as those prescribed by their GP. Because of this, doctors are usually very wary when prescribing drugs that can trigger addiction in patients – these are usually not allowed on a repeat prescription for this reason.
Once somebody is addicted to painkillers such as Tramadol, which is often used to treat severe pain, it can be very difficult to wean off from. This can even cause problems such as withdrawal which is hard to treat without the use of recovery services.
Aside from physical pain, some patients also take drugs for mental health reasons. Diazepam is often prescribed to people to aid with anxiety issues. In the case of some people, this dose needs to be consistently upped in order to gain the same effect. This is what causes them to be so addictive and can cause withdrawal symptoms if not stopped correctly.
Some people have had a rough upbringing
If someone grows up in a bad environment then this can also be a cause of a lot of addiction problems later on in life. Young people who grew up around alcohol abuse have been shown to develop similar tendencies when they grow up. This is something a lot of people have no choice in, due to it happening in their own home.
Some people start taking drugs recreationally
In the short term, taking drugs recreationally may not seem like such a big deal. However, in the long term this can cause a lot of problems. It has been found in a lot of people who suffer from drug and alcohol addiction that they first started taking their preferred substance due to social pressures.
What to expect in at a centre for drug and alcohol rehab in Eccles
All of our addiction treatment centres aim to personally address any of the problems you may be facing. These centres allow you to stay away from the substances you use in order to help you to remain sober during your stay.
When you first arrive in one of our rehab centres you will start by entering detoxification. During this, we will aim to rid your body of any toxins and get you to a sober state before we proceed with treating the addiction.
Once this is complete, we can move onto the real work – treating the core of the problem. We tackle this using therapy sessions conducted with an addiction counsellor. During these sessions, we aim to go through your past to address any of the problems that may have led you to where you currently are. We also offer group therapy sessions where you are able to form a bond with fellow patients who are going through the same drug rehab as yourself.
