How A Drug or Alcohol Addiction Starts
An addiction is a disease that can happen to anyone, from many walks of life. Both people from a healthy financial background, to those that are financially disadvantaged. Many young people occasionally dabble in drugs and alcohol – due to curiosity mostly. For some people, it stays with experimenting – but for others, it can become a life-ruining activity.
Drug addiction often happens gradually, with the addict not realising they might be addicted until it’s too late. Drug use hijacks the reward-pleasure element in your brain. Drugs create extra feel-good chemicals, and your brain starts to struggle to produce that chemical naturally. Your body will then feel like it needs the drugs to feel normal, and that process gets worse as the drug abuse goes on. This is the way addiction starts, as it is difficult for many addicts to leave drugs to it.
Some people are simply more susceptible to falling into an addiction. There are a few risk factors, however. The more risk factors anyone has been subjected to, the more likely there is a chance that this person might develop an addiction. An example of a factor is the genetic factor. Addiction can run in the family, and many children of addicts become addicts themselves because the brain works in similar ways in comparison to their parents.
The environment of a person also influences the susceptibility of your addiction. Many of the people in our rehab clinic have come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Peer pressure and a lack of parental guidance have been very influential in the development of an addiction. To add to that, the age of a drug addict also plays a role in the possibility of an addiction developing. When drugs are tried at a young age, and the brain is not fully developed yet, it could lead to permanent damage to the brain.
How Does Residential Rehab Work?
Do you feel that most of the above situations describe your current life? You might have to consider joining our rehab centre. You do not immediately have to sign up, you can always call us and one of our specialists will be able to give you a callback. Whether that would be an advisory call about our services, or if you have no idea whether you’re addicted or not – our specialist will be able to answer your questions during a FREE advisory call.
If you indeed wish to continue your road to sobriety with Ocean Recovery Centre, we will be able to pick you up from your Wilmslow home and transport you to our centre in Blackpool, a mere hour away by car.
Once you decide to join our rehab service – the detoxification process starts. This is where the trained medical professionals supervise you for a specific time, whilst you are withdrawing from the drug. The first step of the rehab process, as withdrawal symptoms might present themselves if the addiction is severe. This is very common in drugs like Heroin for instance.
During Heroin withdrawal, you might experience symptoms like cravings, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhoea and vomiting, cold flushes with goose bumps (“cold turkey”), kicking movements (“kicking the habit”), and other symptoms.
During your initial assessment, it will be explained the whole process and what withdrawal symptoms you may experience depending on the nature of your addiction. We will also explain what medication and treatments we can provide to make the detoxification process as easy as possible. And our medical professionals will be available at any time to administer any drug needed in case the withdrawal symptoms become particularly nasty and support you throughout.
Once you have completed the detoxification clinic you can begin your recovery treatment because addiction is so complex, we have a variety of treatments available and a mixture of these treatments will be used.
Here is a small selection of the treatments and therapies we have available to all clients:
- Medical Treatments – Medicinal treatments are usually used for opiate-based addictions. These medicines are carefully monitored by our trained staff.
- Talking Therapies – We use a number of psychological approaches from one-on-one counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and group therapy session. Group therapy is very beneficial with elevating feelings of isolation, which often comes with addiction. These treatments are very beneficial for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Homoeopathic Treatments – We believe relaxation is a key element of recovery. So, at Ocean Recovery we have a large range of massage, acupuncture and meditation available.
What Happens After Rehab?
Once you have completed a residential rehabilitation stay many fear what happens once they leave. At Ocean Recovery we have developed a dedicated aftercare team. This aftercare team will be available to all clients via a helpline and before you leave Ocean Recovery a relapse prevention plan will be designed with your specific needs to add an additional level of comfort for once you return home.
