It’s a sad and unfortunate fact that drug and alcohol addiction isn’t being discussed as much as it could be. Most people will know of someone, or even be struggling themselves with some kind of long term drug or alcohol problem. This is one of the main reasons we at Ocean Recovery make it our main goal to give people in the local area access to our drug and alcohol rehab Bebington programme.
How our addiction treatments could benefit you
One of the hardest things to do when you are suffering from long term substance abuse is to admit you have a problem in the first place. Many people think that they can simply cope with what is happening and that the problem isn’t as bad as people think. This is a very troublesome way to look at things. We find that a lot of people who come to us for drug and alcohol addiction didn’t truly realise the negative impact their drug or alcohol problems were having on their friends and families lives until they were sober.
We aim to not only give treatment options to people who need it but to help them develop long term solutions to their problems while they stay in residential rehabilitation. One of the ways we do this is through therapy. Our addiction counsellors are on hand to help you every step of the way through your recovery. Therapy has proven to be one of the most successful treatment options that are on offer. This is mainly due to other treatment options only tackling the surface problems of the addiction and not the core.
In our one-to-one therapy sessions, patients are able to discuss any past problems or traumas they may have had to suffer through which could be a possible link to the current addiction. Group therapy sessions are another great way for patients to tackle their drug and alcohol problem. Here, patients can become friends, make bonds and start to build a strong support network for the future.
How to know if you need help
Now that you know the type of services we offer, the first question you need to ask yourself is “do I need help?”. If you’ve somehow found your way onto this page then you must have definitely thought this at some point.
One of the worst things to happen to someone in life is that they become addicted to substances. The damage that this can cause to your health and those around you should not be taken lightly.
If you find yourself focusing more and more on the substance and less and less on your daily life then this is one of a number of warning signs. Even realising that you are dependant is an important step to take. For many people this can take years and often requires a lot of outside help or an intervention.
You may also find that aspects of your personal life are starting to be affected by your drug or alcohol problem. Maybe your friends or family have found out about it and decided to part ways with you? An employer may have started to take notice, repercussions from the abuse may have gotten you in trouble with the law. Any one of these reasons alone is a massive sign that you need help.
What could happen if you don’t seek help
The obvious worst-case scenario is that you could lose your life. The negative implications that sustained substance abuse has on the human body cannot be highlighted enough. Alcohol abuse puts a great strain on the liver and it can be very difficult to recover from.
If your social circle or support network starts to break down because of substance misuse then it will also greatly affect your mental health. You will start to become isolated which in turn will lead you to depend on the substance even more. This is where addiction truly starts to become a vicious circle.
What causes addiction in the first place?
The cause of addiction is a highly researched subject. There is no one correct answer to this question, there are, however, a number of documented reasons. Some say that addictive tendencies are something that develops as you grow up and others say that you can be born with them.
Some of the main underlying reasons found for addiction are as follows:
- Past traumas – If you have had to deal with tough situations in your life then these high stress events can cause people to become dependent. Events such as grief, family breakups, relationships failing or even a loss of income can be potential triggers.
- Your social circle – if you regularly socialise with a group of friends who partake in drug or alcohol use then it is more than likely that you may join in at some point. This peer-pressure is a very strong motivator.
- Mental health issues – If you suffer from mental health issues then you may decide to self-medicate at some point. If you feel like you are getting nowhere with your current medication then it can be hard to resist the urge.
